Hong Kong HKMA Green Fintech Symposium 2026: Eddie Yue Calls for Smarter Deployment of Transition Capital and Greenwashing Safeguards

On 11 September 2026, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority hosted the 2026 Green Fintech Symposium.1 The event closed Hong Kong Green Week 2026. Its theme was "Smarter Finance for a Greener Transition". More than 450 participants attended in person and online. HKMA Chief Executive Mr Eddie Yue delivered the opening remarks. He called for capital to be deployed more intelligently in the net zero transition. He identified greenwashing as a risk that targeted finance must guard against. Policymakers, investors, financiers and technology leaders joined panels and a fireside chat. Discussions covered transition infrastructure and AI driven sustainable finance. A solution showcase presented home grown green fintech solutions. These address ESG data, carbon markets, climate risk management and ESG disclosure.

The Chief Executive's Opening Remarks

"Achieving a netzero and climateresilient economy is not just about mobilising more capital; it is about deploying capital more intelligently. We need finance that is sharply targeted to ensure capital flows to high-impact decarbonisation projects, guard against the risks of greenwashing, and respond agilely to the complexities of real economy transition," said Mr Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the HKMA.1

The HKMA intends to move the policy emphasis from the volume of green capital to the quality of its allocation. Allocation quality depends on data integrity, and data integrity is the terrain where green fintech either controls greenwashing risk or amplifies it.

The Programme And Participants

Deputy Chief Executive Mr Arthur Yuen moderated a fireside chat with Ms Natalie Blyth, Global Head of Sustainable Finance and Transition at HSBC, and Mr Emmanuel Lagarrigue, Global Co-Head of Climate Transition Strategy and Head of Sustainability at KKR.1 Ms Bénédicte Nolens, Centre Head of the BIS Innovation Hub Hong Kong, moderated a panel with representatives of Bloomberg, ERM Hong Kong, MSCI and Amazon Web Services. A further panel, moderated by Mr Howard Lee of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, brought together the founders of YoujiVest Hong Kong, Negawatt Zero2, InnoBlock Technology and BlueOnion.1

The Symposium was supported by the FinTech Association of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Invest Hong Kong and the One Earth Alliance.1

The Solution Showcase and Its Cross Boundary Reach

The showcase spotlighted home grown green fintech solutions through on stage presentations and exhibition booths.1 The HKMA purports these solutions to have the potential to help banks and corporates "in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and beyond" address issues in ESG data, carbon markets, climate risk management, ESG disclosure and sustainable finance.1

The geographic framing in the above is the policy signal. The HKMA is positioning Hong Kong's green fintech sector as an export capability serving Mainland and regional demand, consistent with its wider Greater Bay Area orientation in sustainable finance.

Hong Kong Green Week 2026 In Context

Hong Kong Green Week 2026 was the third edition of the city's flagship sustainability event, running from 7 to 11 September 2026 under the theme "Future-proofing Sustainable Growth" and coordinated by the HKMA.2 The Symposium sits within a policy framework the HKMA has built over several years, including the Hong Kong Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance published in May 2024, the Sustainable Finance Action Agenda of October 2024, and supervisory expectations on climate risk management for authorised institutions under Supervisory Policy Manual module GS-1.3

Where Green Fintech Meets Digital Assets

The release does not refer to tokenisation or distributed ledger technology. The intersection is nonetheless established in Hong Kong's public record. The HKSAR Government issued a HK$800 million tokenised green bond in February 2023 and multi currency digital green bonds of approximately HK$6 billion in February 2024.4 Carbon markets and ESG data verification, both named in the showcase scope, are areas where ledger based registries and tokenised carbon instruments are under development. Firms building such products in Hong Kong should read the greenwashing emphasis in the opening remarks as applying with equal force to digitally issued green instruments.
