Bank of China Issues First Tokenised Notes in Hong Kong

Bank of China became the first Chinese financial institution to issue a tokenised security in Hong Kong. BOCI – Bank of China’s offshore invest bank – issued CNH 200 million fully digital structured notes which were placed by UBS to its clients in the Asia Pacific region, marking a long-term collaboration between BOCI and UBS in the digital structured note space. UBS previously issued USD 50 million tokenized fix rate notes on a permissioned blockchain in December 2022. BOCI’s digital structured note issue is the first product of its kind in the Asia Pacific; the notes are constituted under Hong Kong and Swiss law and tokenised on the main Ethereum blockchain, successfully introducing regulated securities onto a public blockchain.
