On 5 August 2026, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (US SEC) announced the establishment of a dedicated Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within its Division of Enforcement.1 It will pursue accounting and financial reporting fraud cases. It will also pursue general misconduct in the accounting and auditing areas. The unit will be led by Mr Timothy Zimmerman. Zimmerman joined the Division of Enforcement in May 2026 as senior advisor to the Director. The unit will be staffed by both attorneys and accountants. Staff will hold specialised skills in financial reporting, accounting and auditing in securities regulation. The announcement was made by Mr David Woodcock, Director of the Division of Enforcement. The unit reports within the specialised units structure headed by Principal Deputy Director Osman Nawaz. The move signals renewed SEC enforcement focus on issuer financial statements, audit quality and gatekeeper accountability.
The US SEC announced that the new Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit has been established within the Division of Enforcement to provide dedicated expertise, greater operational focus and additional enforcement capacity in matters involving accounting and financial reporting.
According to the Commission, the unit will pursue:
- accounting and financial reporting fraud;
- accounting misconduct;
- auditing related misconduct; and
- broader violations involving the accounting and auditing profession.
The Commission further states that the unit will work closely with staff across all relevant SEC divisions and offices to ensure that enforcement activities remain consistent with the Commission's policy objectives.
David Woodcock, Director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement, said: "Since my return to the Division, I have been assessing every aspect of our staffing to ensure that we are aligned to deliver results in our core mission areas. This new unit – which expands on the Division's current and historical efforts to crack down on bad actors in the accounting and auditing profession – will be critical in our efforts to pursuing financial reporting fraud, as well as accounting and auditor misconduct more generally,"
The unit will be led by Mr Timothy Zimmerman, who joined the Division of Enforcement in May 2026 as a senior advisor to the Director.1 Prior to joining the agency, Zimmerman worked for twelve years at an international law firm and most recently served as Deputy General Counsel at an international accounting and professional services firm.1
"I look forward to working with Tim on this important endeavor. His depth of experience and passion are tremendous assets that will help the Division," said Mr Osman Nawaz, Principal Deputy Director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement and head of specialized units.1
